Allan Shepherd from the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) has given composting a Jamie Oliver makeover with a book that contains eight easy to follow recipes for compost.
CAT has pioneered several different ways of making compost over the years, using different ingredients such as cardboard to produce a nutrient-rich soil, which has helped turn CAT’s abandoned slate quarry into productive vegetable-growing organic gardens.
The Little Book of Compost gives gardeners a complete party plan for good composting, showing how to make your guests - soil organisms such as worms – happy. It outlines several recipes that are more appetising than a Boxing Day curry and also looks at different bins, tools and techniques for easy composting.
What could be a better gift this Christmas than a fun book about composting that takes a fresh approach to the subject and helps potential compost master chefs deal with all those potato peelings, carrot trimmings and leftover sprouts? Not to mention wrapping paper, cards and cracker hats.
With recipes including Soil in the Bag, Cold Turkey, Bokashi Sushi and The Hot Turnover to help you make great compost, next seasons blooms will come up stronger and be more resistant to pests and diseases.
