Chandeliers Return to the Living Room

Chandeliers Return to the Living Room
The Carlton Chandelier in Antique French Gold

Once the darlings of the Regency period, Chandeliers are making a come back according to lighting expert, Christopher Hyde. Christopher attributes this current chandelier phenomenon to the trend amongst top designers to create lavish interiors featuring dramatic, large scale furniture, opulent fabrics and boldly patterned wallpapers. Such grand decorative styling requires lighting that will dazzle and enhance the lush ambiance created.

Though most of us probably have memories of elderly relatives with out of place glass chandeliers hanging from ill-proportioned ceilings (my grandmother always had ideas of grandeur), the great chandeliers of 150 years ago were traditionally found in drawing rooms and function rooms. Not many people have ballrooms anymore, but the generous proportions of living rooms in some period properties do allow for even large chandeliers to hung.

The Carlton, pictured above, is one of 25 designs in the Christopher Hyde chandelier collection. Made from Bohemian crystal the 15 light version shown here is an imposing 1.2 metres tall and retails at £7,696.

For a more contemporary look coloured crystal is now being introduced for added drama. Christopher Hyde’s Belgravia chandelier features smoked with contrasting clear crystal and starts at £5,287, whilst the delicate Veneto features accent colours such as blue, amber and green starts at £1,410.
