A door welcomes people into a home and is a crucial part of defining its character
I love to stand in front of a period house and look at the entrance. It's one of the most fascinating parts of an older home for me as it can tell so much about the history of a house. My personal favourite is thick, oak timber doors.
If you're renovating, I'd always recommend where possible to keep the original door, but this isn't always possible and sometime there is no choice other than to replace it.
Companies such as Broadleaf Timber do offer a made to measure service using traditional methods and carefully selected timber.
With Broadleaf you have a choice of either a classic door design from the company's collection, or having a completely bespoke one created, which is perfect if you want an original period door to be copied.
Although I'd advocate spending a little extra money on the main entrance to a house, don't forget to take into consideration the overall style of the property. Having an ostentatious entrance to a two-up, two-down terrace can considerably take away its original appeal. For more information visit www.broadleaftimber.com
